Nigeria’s Flying Eagles saw their title hopes dashed at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations following a 1-0 defeat to South Africa in a tense semifinal encounter on Thursday, May 15.

Having secured a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Senegal in the quarterfinals, the Nigerian side came into the match with confidence and momentum.

That win had also confirmed their place at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, offering a silver lining in their tournament journey. But against the Amajita of South Africa, Nigeria couldn’t find the spark needed to continue their run.

The game opened with both teams playing cautiously, each looking to pounce on mistakes through quick transitions. Nigeria controlled much of the ball but lacked penetration in the final third. South Africa’s disciplined defence frustrated the Flying Eagles, and the opening 45 minutes ended goalless.

Early in the second half, Nigeria suffered a major setback as teenage goalkeeper Ebenezer Ifeanyi-Harcourt was forced off with an injury. His replacement, Ajia Soliu Yakub, was called into action quickly but had a tough introduction.

In the 66th minute, South Africa capitalised on a rare opportunity when Tylon Christopher Smith rose highest to nod home a decisive header, handing the Amajita the advantage.

Coach Aliyu Zubairu responded with multiple substitutions, hoping to turn the tide. However, despite their pressing and possession, the Flying Eagles couldn’t find a breakthrough. South Africa held their ground and managed the remaining minutes effectively to secure a hard-fought win and a place in the final.

For Nigeria, it’s a disappointing end to their AFCON title dreams, but the focus now shifts to the U-20 World Cup. Improvements in finishing and in-game decision-making will be vital ahead of the global tournament.
