A fire broke out on Thursday afternoon at the Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital in Lagos, prompting fear and confusion among staff and patients as smoke filled part of the facility.
The blaze, which reportedly started around midday, led to an immediate emergency response. Videos circulating online showed firefighters arriving swiftly at the hospital as thick smoke rose from an upper floor of the main building.
By early evening, the specific cause of the fire remained unknown.
Later that day, Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed in a statement that the fire had been brought under control and that no one was injured.
“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has successfully doused a minor fire incident that occurred in a nursing room on the second floor of the main three-storey building at the Ifako Ijaiye General Hospital, located on Iju Road, Ifako Ijaiye, Lagos,” Adeseye stated.
She added, “The fire, which was reported at approximately 15:20 hours, was quickly brought under control, preventing significant damage to the busy healthcare facility.”
According to her, the fire was confined to the room where it began, with no impact on other areas of the hospital.
“Normal operations have resumed, and medical services to the public continue uninterrupted. No casualties were recorded. An investigation into the cause of the fire has commenced,” she noted.
Eyewitnesses said medical personnel and patients were seen rushing out of the building to avoid possible harm as smoke spread through the affected section.
