The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of popular social media figure Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, in connection with multiple petitions received by the agency.
Speaking to BBC News Pidgin on Monday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale said the activist was detained following allegations of cyberstalking brought forward by several complainants.
“We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners,” Oyewale stated.
He further explained that the commission intends to pursue legal action once the bail process is concluded. “We will release him when he meets the bail conditions and we will take the case to court as soon as possible; we are law-abiding,” he added.
Responding to questions about whether the case involved Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), Oyewale clarified that the complaints were filed by different individuals, emphasizing that the EFCC has a responsibility to protect those who report alleged crimes.
Oyewale also noted that plans are underway to arraign the social media activist in court.
