The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially confirmed that Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, has been detained following allegations of financial misconduct. The EFCC cited his repeated failure to respond to multiple requests for questioning as the reason for his arrest.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the EFCC explained that Otse had been invited to answer questions related to several petitions filed against him concerning alleged financial crimes. The Commission clarified that his detention was not a result of his public criticism or comments about the EFCC but stemmed from his non-compliance with official invitations.

“Martins Otse was invited for questioning due to numerous allegations of financial misconduct raised in various petitions,” the EFCC noted.

The Commission also addressed public rumors, urging Nigerians to refrain from making assumptions and allow the EFCC to perform its constitutional duties without interference.

“The EFCC should be allowed to perform its responsibilities impartially,” the statement read, adding that “once the investigation is completed, appropriate charges will be filed.”

Further clarifying the situation, the EFCC emphasized that Otse had ignored repeated invitations sent to his known addresses and communication platforms.

“The suspect did not show up despite numerous invitations,” the EFCC stated.

While acknowledging Otse’s outspoken criticism of its activities, the EFCC stressed that these remarks were not a factor in his arrest.

“Although his remarks are concerning, they did not influence his arrest. The relevant authorities will address them separately,” the Commission explained.

The EFCC also reaffirmed that its actions were in line with legal procedures, and a proper remand order had been obtained to hold Otse during the investigation.

“The EFCC is within its legal rights to hold the suspect while the investigation is underway. A proper remand order was obtained,” the statement concluded.

Finally, the EFCC confirmed that Otse had been granted administrative bail, with his release dependent on meeting the required conditions.
