Chess champion Tunde Onakoya has fulfilled his promise to support the education of an 11-year-old girl who recently went viral in a video highlighting child labor issues.
The girl, who was seen sweeping alongside her mother, captured the attention of many Nigerians, sparking widespread discussions and calls for action.
In an update shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Onakoya posted a photo of the girl and her parents, announcing that she has been awarded a full educational scholarship that will cover her studies through to university.
The viral video, which featured activist Adetoun confronting the girl’s mother about child labor, drew mixed reactions across social media.
While some demanded immediate intervention, Onakoya opted for a compassionate approach, reflecting on his own difficult past.
Having experienced poverty and hardship firsthand including sweeping houses and gutters with his own mother back in 2016 Onakoya understands the challenges faced by many children in similar situations. He emphasized the importance of empathy, education, and support rather than condemnation.
“As promised, the young girl visited our Chess Innovation Hub with her parents and has now been placed on a full-ride educational scholarship till she’s done with university,” Onakoya wrote in his post.
Onakoya’s gesture not only highlights the power of education as a tool for change but also demonstrates how personal experiences can inspire meaningful community support.
His Chess Innovation Hub continues to provide opportunities for youth development beyond just the game, fostering hope for brighter futures.
