Popular Nigerian comedian Acapella has revealed that he received several threats after publicly criticizing Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, over the controversy surrounding claims that Lagos is smelling.

The issue began when influencer Scott Iguma went viral with a video stating that Lagos “smells” and is infested with “big mosquitoes.”

In response, Commissioner Wahab dismissed the claims and accused some individuals particularly migrants from other states seeking opportunities in Lagos of deliberately spreading harmful narratives on social media to tarnish the state’s image.

Acapella reacted strongly on social media, accusing the commissioner of showing double standards, especially concerning ethnicity and origin. His criticism sparked heated exchanges between him and supporters of the Lagos State Government.

Acapella disclosed that he had received numerous threatening direct messages and calls during the dispute. Despite this, he remained firm in his stance, emphasizing national unity and the importance of addressing problems openly.

“No Nigerian is more Nigerian than any other Nigerian,” he said. “Don’t let anybody gaslight you into believing you are de-marketing the country; especially when you point out the ills that befall us as a nation. The first step to solving any problem is to first identify that there’s one. We are all we have.”

Acapella’s comments highlight the sensitive nature of discussions around Lagos’s environmental challenges and the wider issues of social unity and accountability in Nigeria.
