Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has reportedly been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) under controversial circumstances, with his legal team alleging assault and denial of access.
According to human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju, the incident occurred on Thursday, May 2, 2025, after Otse visited a GTBank branch in Abuja to complain about unauthorized deductions from his account. He was accompanied by his mother and a friend, Steven Avuara.
The trio were allegedly ambushed outside the bank by men in black uniforms, who reportedly beat and blindfolded Otse and Avuara before whisking them away. They were later identified as EFCC operatives. The two were taken to the commission’s Special Duty Committee Unit 4 in Abuja.
Adeyanju claims the EFCC has refused to grant Otse access to his lawyers or family since his arrest. In a statement shared on social media, the lawyer said EFCC officials went as far as calling Otse a “bandit” without offering any official explanation for such a label.
While the EFCC has reportedly produced an arrest warrant citing cyberstalking as the basis for Otse’s detention, no justification was given for Avuara’s continued custody. Meanwhile, Avuara, who had limited contact with the outside world, confirmed that both he and Otse were physically assaulted during the arrest.
The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with supporters and rights groups demanding the immediate release of the activist and a thorough investigation into the EFCC's actions.
