Nollywood actress and former reality TV star, Beverly Osu, has openly criticised the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), questioning the direction the event is taking in recent years.
Taking to her social media page, Beverly didn’t hold back as she voiced her disappointment over what she described as a growing obsession with glam and social media clout at the expense of true artistic merit.
According to her, the once-prestigious celebration of African filmmaking is slowly becoming more about flashy appearances than actual achievements.
In a sharp post, Osu drew comparisons between AMVCA and global film events like the Cannes Film Festival, which recently announced strict red carpet rules to tone down over-the-top outfits.
She lamented that while international festivals are taking steps to honour creators and their work, AMVCA seems to be heading in the opposite direction.
“What used to be a platform to applaud the hard work of African filmmakers now resembles a costume party,” she wrote. “It’s no longer about genuine storytelling or impactful performances it’s all about who has the most followers or the most dramatic outfit.”
Osu expressed concern that the real heroes behind the scenes directors, scriptwriters, editors, and actors are being pushed aside in favour of viral red carpet moments.
She called on the industry to reset its focus, stressing that filmmaking is serious work and not just a platform for likes and reposts.
“This isn’t just about aesthetics. Let’s remember what we’re here to celebrate the craft,” she concluded.
