Comedian and actor AY Makun has confirmed that he was invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for questioning over the abuse of the Naira.
This follows a recent crackdown by the anti-graft agency targeting the improper handling of currency, a practice that has become controversial in Nigerian public events.
AY revealed in an Instagram post that he was questioned by the EFCC on Monday regarding an incident where he was seen spraying both local and foreign currencies at a public celebration. The post included a video of the event and another explaining the proper way to handle the Naira.
He acknowledged that money spraying is a cultural tradition during Nigerian weddings, funerals, and other celebrations but stressed that it remains illegal under Nigerian law.
In his statement, AY expressed his gratitude to the EFCC for their understanding and noted that the money he sprayed was not linked to illicit funds or proceeds of crime.
He emphasized the importance of respecting the national currency, describing it as a symbol of Nigeria’s sovereignty and economic stability.
Despite the cultural significance of money spraying, AY’s experience highlights the growing concern around the abuse of the Naira, a practice the EFCC is determined to curb.
His case follows similar actions taken against Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo and businessman E-Money, both of whom were also questioned by the agency over similar incidents.
In conclusion, AY urged Nigerians to respect the Naira and adhere to the law, pointing out that defacing, spraying, or mishandling the currency undermines its integrity and has legal consequences. This serves as a reminder for the public that cultural practices must align with the laws of the country.
