Allen Onyema, the CEO of Air Peace, in a statement that has resonated across the country, has publicly acknowledged social media activist Verydarkblackman as the driving force behind the rescue of over 70 stranded Nigerians from Ivory Coast.
The returnees, mostly young women, were flown back to Nigeria free of charge aboard an Air Peace flight. But Onyema insists the credit does not belong to him.
“Nigeria shouldn't be thanking me for bringing back over 70 Nigerians from Ivory Coast free of charge. They should be thanking Verydarkblackman for rescuing them. That young man is the hero of this movement. He created awareness before I stepped in, he has been a real blessing to Nigeria,” Onyema said as the girls landed safely on Nigerian soil.
The story began when disturbing videos surfaced online showing the dire conditions Nigerian girls were facing in Ivory Coast. Many had been trafficked, abused, or left stranded with no means to return home. These images caught the attention of Verydarkblackman, a popular and outspoken activist on social media known for calling out injustice and pushing for urgent action.
Verydarkblackman used his platform to highlight the situation, sparking massive awareness and public outcry. His efforts drew the attention of both the Nigerian government and private individuals like Allen Onyema.
Moved by the situation and the growing social demand for intervention, Allen Onyema offered to deploy an Air Peace aircraft to bring the girls home at no cost. This is not the first time the airline has been involved in humanitarian evacuations, but Onyema was quick to redirect the spotlight.
“Without the advocacy and courage of Verydarkblackman, many of us wouldn’t have even known what was happening,” Onyema added.
The return of the girls has been widely celebrated across social media and traditional media platforms. Nigerians are praising both the activist and the airline for their roles in what many are calling a miraculous rescue mission.
