Pope Francis Passes Away on Easter Monday

The world is grieving the loss of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025.

The Vatican confirmed his death, which occurred peacefully at his residence in Casa Santa Marta at 7:35 AM local time. This somber moment marks the end of a papacy defined by simplicity, compassion, and a profound connection to the marginalized.

Just a day before his death, Pope Francis made his final public appearance, greeting the faithful in St Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday. Although frail and seated in a wheelchair, he waved to the crowd, offering a heartfelt “Happy Easter,” while his aide read his Easter message. This final gesture reflected the Pope’s commitment to remain engaged with the faithful, even in his later years.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, became the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church in 2013. His election was historic, as he was the first pope from the Americas, the first Jesuit pope, and the first non-European pope in over a millennium. 

His papacy was marked by a call for humility, social justice, and interfaith dialogue, with a special focus on the poor, refugees, and the marginalized.

In a break from tradition, Pope Francis had requested a modest funeral, with his body placed in a simple wooden coffin lined with zinc. He will be buried in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, the first pope in over a century to be laid to rest outside the Vatican. This decision reflects his lifelong commitment to simplicity and service to the Church.

Cardinal Farrell expressed deep sorrow, announcing that Pope Francis had “returned to the house of the Father,” acknowledging his unwavering dedication to the Church throughout his life.
