Renowned Nigerian comedian and actor Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, widely known as Okey Bakassi, has been officially crowned the traditional ruler of Umuihuocha Obohia Autonomous Community in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area, Imo State.
At 55, the seasoned entertainer has now assumed the revered title of His Royal Highness, Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, OKWE II of Umuihuocha Obohia. His ascension to the throne marks him as the second monarch to bear the “OKWE” title, continuing a legacy deeply rooted in the community’s cultural history.
Though little is publicly known about the previous ruler, OKWE I, the title itself holds significant traditional weight, symbolising enduring leadership within the Mbaise region.
Umuihuocha Obohia, situated in the heart of Imo State’s culturally rich Mbaise axis, is respected for its strong communal bonds and dedication to traditional values. The choice of Okey Bakassi as their monarch reflects the community’s belief in his capacity to serve with wisdom and integrity, beyond his years of success in the entertainment industry.
Taking to social media on Sunday, the newly installed royal expressed gratitude for the honour. “Special thanks to the entire Umuihuocha Autonomous Community….a new beginning,” he wrote.
Now wearing the crown, Okey Bakassi transitions from a celebrated career in comedy and acting to a life of service, embracing a new chapter shaped by heritage, responsibility, and leadership.
