The Edo State House of Assembly has recently undergone a leadership shake-up with the removal of Hon. Natasha Osawaru Irobosa from her position as the Minority Leader. Osawaru, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was replaced alongside Hon.
Charity Aiguobarueghian, the Majority Leader, and Hon. Yekini Idaiye, the Chief Whip, both also from the PDP. Despite the changes, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku and Hon. Maria Edeko, who serve as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively, retained their positions.
The leadership changes were prompted by a letter from Jarret Tenebe, the acting chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, which highlighted that the PDP had lost its majority status in the Assembly following the defection of four PDP lawmakers to the APC. This significant shift in political dynamics within the House paved the way for new appointments that reflect the APC's growing influence.
In the aftermath, Speaker Agbebaku announced the appointment of new leaders, including Hon. Ibhamawu Jonathan Aigbokhan from the APC as the Majority Leader, Hon. Addeh Emakhu Isibor as the Deputy Leader, and Hon. Lecky Hussein Mustapha as the Chief Whip. These changes were made in line with the new political reality in the Assembly.
While the new leadership structure has been set in motion, Agbebaku clarified that the PDP leadership in the state would still be allowed to submit its own list of nominees for principal positions. However, he also pointed out that his own position, along with that of the Deputy Speaker, might not be secure in the revised leadership framework. This shake-up underscores the evolving political landscape in Edo State as party affiliations continue to shift within the Assembly.
