The Lagos State Government has confirmed the return of the iconic Fanti Carnival, a celebration of culture and heritage scheduled for Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025. This year's edition will take place at the Remembrance Arcade in Tafawa Balewa Square and promises to be a vibrant display of music, parades, and Afro-Brazilian tradition.

Ahead of the event, organizers unveiled the parade route via the carnival’s official Instagram page. The procession will begin at the Remembrance Arcade and weave through Old Defence Road, JK Randle, Military Street, and Catholic Mission Street, showcasing the lively spirit of Lagos Island.

During a press conference at the Brazilian Consulate earlier in the week, Lagos Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the Fanti Carnival as a cultural treasure rooted in 19th-century Afro-Brazilian heritage. She noted its unique mix of Yoruba customs, samba flair, and Catholic ceremonial influences, saying it’s more than entertainment it’s a celebration of identity and resilience.

Benson-Awoyinka also lauded Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for supporting the festival’s comeback, saying his administration is committed to boosting cultural tourism and promoting inclusiveness through the arts.

Brazil’s Consul General in Lagos, Ambassador Manuel Innocencio del Lacerda Santos Jr., highlighted the shared cultural bonds between Nigeria and Brazil, emphasizing food, music, and spirituality as unifying elements.

Also present was Mr. Peter Richie of IconGeo, who presented archival maps of Lagos and emphasized how urban development can benefit from local cultural participation.

The 2025 Fanti Carnival will feature live performances, traditional storytelling, culinary showcases, and a fashion parade, reinforcing Lagos State’s commitment to developing a year-round cultural tourism calendar.
