Ghanaian-Nollywood star Juliet Ibrahim has joined the growing list of film industry voices speaking out against Ghanaian television stations accused of airing movies without proper authorisation.

The controversy intensified in March when Nigerian actress Omoni Oboli publicly called out certain Ghanaian broadcasters for unlawfully airing her work. More recently, Bimbo Ademoye also accused a Ghanaian TV station of using her film’s title and poster without permission, along with airing her movies without consent.

Now, Juliet Ibrahim has revealed she is facing the same issue. In a lengthy Instagram post, the actress and filmmaker condemned the unauthorised broadcast of her films, calling the actions of the TV stations “shameful” and a threat to Africa’s creative economy.

“As an independent filmmaker, actress, director, and producer, I find it extremely disheartening to witness the blatant disregard for intellectual property rights by several TV stations operating within Ghana,” she wrote.

Juliet said her films, originally and legally uploaded to her official YouTube channel—Juliet Ibrahim Studios—have been pirated and rebroadcast without authorisation. She named Pemsan TV as one of the stations involved.

According to her, despite multiple efforts by her team to resolve the matter legally, the stations continue to air her work without consent.

“Despite repeated efforts by my management and legal representatives; who have sent cease and desist letters, contacted these networks directly, and offered an opportunity for a formal resolution. Pemsan TV and others have continued to air my work unlawfully, ignoring our calls and refusing to do the needful,” she stated.

Juliet voiced her support for Oboli and Ademoye, stressing that piracy is not limited to Nigeria or Ghana but is a widespread African problem that threatens the entire industry.

“This is not just a Nigerian issue; it is an African issue, and as a Ghanaian, I am ashamed that our local media houses are playing a central role in such unethical and illegal activities,” she added.

Calling piracy “theft,” she urged Ghanaian authorities to act swiftly and decisively.

“We call on the rightful authorities including National Communications Authority (NCA), Ghana Copyright Office, Ghana Police Service, National Film Authority, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and Ghana Media Commission,” she wrote.

Juliet warned that if left unchecked, this illegal behaviour could severely damage Ghana’s cultural reputation, stressing that Africa’s creative talents deserve protection and respect.
