Nigerian singer Konga has stated that he played a key role in encouraging Phyno to embrace rapping in his native Igbo language.

Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, Konga recounted meeting Phyno in Lagos through Mr. Raw. At the time, he was a lead artiste at Morgan Entertainment.

According to Konga, he once asked Phyno to showcase his rap skills, and after noticing his mix of an American accent with Igbo lyrics, he advised him to fully embrace his indigenous language in his music.

“Nigga Raw introduced Phyno to us at Ajao Estate while we were having lunch. He was very young then, and since I was the lead artiste at Morgan Entertainment, I asked him to rap for me. Phyno started with some foreign accent but later added Igbo lines,” Konga shared.

He further explained that he asked Phyno if he had ever considered the global reach of the Igbo-speaking community. Encouraging him, Konga advised the young rapper to fully incorporate his dialect into his music, suggesting that it could make him stand out.

“I asked if he had listened to my songs before and told him he had the potential to be a big deal as an Igbo rapper. I said, ‘You have style; why not approach it like a regular street Igbo boy?’ I was just giving my advice, and he appreciated it. He’s a very humble guy who doesn’t talk much,” Konga added.

He then claimed that not long after their conversation, he heard Phyno’s song with the lyrics “Ndi Ala Ndi Ala.”

Phyno, who started his career as a producer in 2003, has previously stated that his decision to rap in Igbo is a way of honouring his roots and staying authentic.
