Maharazu Tsiga, the former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has shared the harrowing details of his 56-day captivity in the hands of kidnappers, recounting how hyenas came dangerously close to killing him and other hostages a day before their release. Tsiga was abducted on February 5, 2025, from his hometown of Tisga in the Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.
In a heartfelt statement on Thursday, Tsiga spoke to the press in Abuja after the handover of 19 rescued victims to their families. He vividly described his terrifying experience, particularly recalling a chilling moment when hyenas roamed the area, seemingly searching for food – with the hostages being their likely target.
“A day before I left there, that is, the day before yesterday, on the mountain where I was staying, unexpectedly, we looked around and saw hyenas parading, searching for food. And what kind of food? Us, the human beings,” Tsiga recounted, his voice tinged with emotion.
The former NYSC DG also revealed the constant danger posed by snakes and scorpions, which added to the immense hardship they faced. He recalled moments when the kidnappers used high-profile captives like himself as human shields during aerial attacks, a terrifying tactic that made survival even more precarious.
“Whenever they were being attacked, sincerely speaking, they brought us out so that the aircraft could target us,” he said. “But you know, God is merciful. The good ones will continue to live.”
He further detailed the extreme conditions they endured, including a meager diet and regular physical abuse. Tsiga urged Nigerians to contribute to security efforts, stressing that safety is a collective responsibility that requires timely and accurate intelligence to support security agencies in their efforts.
