Fireboy DML, the Afrobeats star behind hits like Peru, has opened up about the struggles he faced before finding success in music. In a candid interview on the 90s Baby Show in London, Fireboy shared the difficulties he was facing in his early life, revealing that he almost resorted to selling rechargeable lamps under Ajah Bridge in Lagos. This revelation comes as a testament to the determination and resilience that shaped his path to stardom.
Before his breakthrough, Fireboy was already involved in menial jobs like selling pepper soup at a local joint, a job he found disheartening and which he kept hidden from his parents. He confessed that while the lamp-selling idea seemed more dignified than his current work, he was looking for a way out of his struggles.
However, in 2018, his life took a dramatic turn when he was signed to YBNL Nation by rapper and music executive Olamide. Reflecting on the signing, Fireboy expressed immense gratitude, saying, “Thank God for that [Olamide signing me]. I was considering selling rechargeable lamps.
I met one guy under Ajah Bridge, he was telling me about the business and I told him I was interested.” The YBNL deal, which came through a WhatsApp message, turned out to be a defining moment in his career, propelling him into the spotlight.
Today, Fireboy’s story serves as an inspiring reminder that with perseverance and a little bit of luck, dreams can come true even from the most unlikely circumstances.
