Afrobeats star Davido has opened up about how his 2012 breakout hit, Dami Duro, transformed his life and helped mend his once-strained relationship with his father, Deji Adeleke.
During a recent appearance on Power 105.1 FM in the United States, the Grammy-nominated singer shared that the success of the track caught not only national attention but also the ears of Nigeria’s then-President, Goodluck Jonathan — and surprisingly, his strict father.
According to Davido, his father was initially against his music career to the point of using extreme measures to stop him.
“Before then, my dad was using the police and army to stop my show and arrest show promoters, artists and everyone connected to any show I am billed to perform in,” he said.
However, the runaway success of Dami Duro was a turning point. The hit track reportedly became so popular that it made its way into Aso Rock.
“I think it was the President’s ringtone. Someone told me. At that point, people started advising my dad to allow me do music,” Davido added.
The hitmaker revealed that he later agreed to return to school to ease the tension at home. Reflecting on those early days, he admitted fear kept him from having an open conversation with his father.
“I said I didn’t have to run away, that I should have spoken to him. No way, I was younger then and he was unapproachable. I told him I was scared of him. Then I was a kid,” he recalled.
Now, things have drastically changed between father and son. Their relationship has grown so strong that Deji Adeleke not only attends Davido’s shows but is actively involved in his business affairs.
“Now, we are best friends, we talk about everything. He comes to all my shows. He is very involved in my business,” Davido said proudly.
