Afrobeats sensation Davido has opened up about a past encounter with American rapper 50 Cent that left a lasting impression on him.
Speaking on The Breakfast Club during Tuesday’s episode, Davido revealed that he once approached the G-Unit star for a photo but was turned down. According to him, the incident happened in Las Vegas when he was just 14 years old during a family trip to celebrate his elder brother’s 21st birthday.
“My dad flew everyone to Vegas for my brother’s birthday, but I was too young to join them at the clubs. I was just chilling in the hotel lobby,” he said.
Davido added that while hanging around, he spotted Lloyd Banks, who was his favourite rapper at the time, and managed to get a picture with him. But things didn’t go as smoothly when he saw 50 Cent.
“I saw 50 Cent and ran up to him saying, ‘Wow! 50 Cent, I love you. Can I take a picture?’ He just said ‘No’ and walked away,” Davido recounted, mimicking his Nigerian accent at the time.
Years later, after making a name for himself globally, Davido said he reminded 50 Cent about the incident when they met again—this time as fellow artistes.
“I told him about it and he just laughed and said, ‘Well, you’re here now, right?’”
Despite the snub, the relationship between both stars seems to have grown over time. A few years ago, Davido joined 50 Cent on stage as a surprise act at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The two are also gearing up to headline a show in London later this year, with R&B legend Mary J. Blige also on the lineup.
