Afrobeats sensation Davido has addressed his relationship with Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi, the Nigerian socialite currently serving a prison sentence in the United States for fraud.
Speaking during a recent podcast interview shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, the music star confirmed they were once friends but maintained he had no idea the convicted scammer was involved in fraudulent activities.
Davido, while expressing support for Hushpuppi, confidently said he believes the embattled socialite will soon regain his freedom.
“Hushpuppi is coming out soon. He lived life. To me, it is not worth it to be locked up. But let me not make excuses for them [fraudsters],” he said.
The singer also hinted at the harsh economic conditions in Nigeria, suggesting that extreme poverty could push some people to engage in fraud just to survive.
“In Nigeria, there is a kind of hardship you would face and you will be like, you know what? Let me ball for two years then I am good. People are like that,” he explained.
Davido further revealed that while he often saw Hushpuppi around, he never really knew the details of his lifestyle or how he made his money. Still, he offered prayers for his former friend.
“My prayers go out to him. He was my friend. I just see him around, I never really knew what he was doing. But he lived a good life,” he added.
