Peter Nwachukwu the partner of the late gospel artist Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by hanging by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja. The judgment was delivered on Monday by Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme, who dismissed Nwachukwu’s no-case submission.
The court convicted Nwachukwu of culpable homicide in connection with the death of his wife on April 8, 2022. Nwachukwu had been brought to court on June 3, 2022, facing 23 charges, including culpable homicide, spousal abuse, child cruelty, and criminal intimidation.
During the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s children, and submitted 25 exhibits. In his defense, Nwachukwu testified and called four additional witnesses, presenting four exhibits. However, Justice Nwosu-Iheme ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Despite pleas for leniency from Nwachukwu’s lawyer, Reginald Nwali, the court sentenced him to death by hanging on Count 1. Additionally, Nwachukwu received prison sentences ranging from six months to three years for various other offenses and was fined N700,000.
The prosecution was represented by Mrs. Aderonke Imana. Osinachi, aged 42, passed away on April 8, 2022, after gaining fame in 2017 for her collaboration with Prospa Ochimana on the hit gospel song “Ekwueme.” Following her death, numerous colleagues accused Nwachukwu of physically abusing her, which they claimed contributed to her demise. He was later arrested in connection with these allegations.
