A Chief Magistrate Court in Ogun State, sitting in Ifo Local Government Area, has sentenced controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, to three months imprisonment with an option of a N30,000 fine.
The ruling was delivered after the court found Portable guilty of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest charges brought against him following a viral incident where he was seen confronting law enforcement officers attempting to carry out a lawful arrest.
The incident sparked public outrage and attracted condemnation from various quarters, with many calling for Portable to be held accountable for his actions.
During the trial, the prosecution presented video evidence showing the singer resisting arrest and physically confronting the officers. Portable, who had earlier denied the allegations, later admitted to his conduct and pleaded for leniency.
The court, while delivering its judgment, stated that his actions were a violation of the law and posed a threat to the integrity of the police force and the rule of law.
In his final ruling, the magistrate sentenced Portable to three months in prison but granted him the option of paying a fine of N30,000 in lieu of jail time.
The court also warned the singer to desist from taking the law into his hands and advised him to be more mindful of his public conduct moving forward.
The case has once again brought to the fore the rising trend of entertainers getting entangled in legal troubles and has sparked discussions about the need for celebrities to lead by example.
Portable, known for his controversial lifestyle and social media rants, has had several run-ins with authorities in the past, raising concerns about his repeated disregard for the law.
