A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to release prominent businesswoman and socialite, Aisha Achimugu, within 24 hours. Justice Inyang Ekwo, who issued the order on Wednesday, directed the anti-graft agency to comply immediately and report back to the court on May 2, 2025.

Achimugu was arrested on Tuesday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged financial crimes. According to the EFCC, she is being probed for conspiracy, money laundering, fraud, and the unlawful acquisition of properties. The agency previously released her on administrative bail but later declared her wanted, accusing her of jumping bail.

Court documents reveal that during her earlier arrest in February 2024, Achimugu admitted receiving N8.71 billion in her corporate accounts to invest in oil blocks.

Through her company, Ocean Gate Engineering Oil and Gas Limited, she allegedly acquired two oil blocks worth $25.3 million, using largely untraceable cash payments via Bureau De Change operators. The EFCC insists the funds’ origins remain unclear and accuse her of bribing regulatory officials to secure the deals.

In response, Achimugu filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit against the EFCC and five other security agencies, seeking protection from further arrest and harassment. Her lawyer argued that the “wanted” declaration was intended to damage her reputation.

Justice Ekwo, ruling on the matter, reaffirmed that Achimugu had been granted bail and ordered her immediate release. The matter has been adjourned to May 2 for a compliance review.

This legal tussle highlights the tensions between Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts and the rights of individuals facing investigation.

The case continues to draw public attention, especially due to Achimugu's high-profile status and the massive sums involved.
