A new controversy has surfaced surrounding Nigerian crossdresser Bobrisky’s time in Kirikiri Prison, with accusations that he smuggled Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards into the facility and bribed officials for VIP treatment during his sentence.

Chief Babalola Shabi, the Baale of Kirikiri Town, known for his no-nonsense stance, claims that Bobrisky used these ATM cards to transfer ₦35 million to prison officials in exchange for better living conditions.

Shabi, a respected community leader, alleges that Bobrisky was not actually serving time behind bars, but had arranged to live in a private apartment outside the prison walls, with the help of prison officials.

This claim was revealed during a town hall meeting organized by the Lagos State Police Command as part of National Police Week events. Shabi explained that before the truth emerged, many believed Bobrisky was confined to Kirikiri, but it later became clear that he was living comfortably in an external apartment, thanks to the collaboration between prison officials and the socialite.

The Baale played a significant role in uncovering the scandal. After inviting Point of Sale (POS) operators in the community to his palace, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) launched an investigation. This probe traced transactions that showed the transfer of ₦35 million through POS vendors, allegedly working with prison officials. Shabi expressed shock at how quickly such a large sum was withdrawn, suggesting a well-organized criminal network.

Following this revelation, Shabi confirmed that both the Department of State Services (DSS) and the EFCC had interrogated him about the matter. He also disclosed that the property where Bobrisky had been staying was identified and subsequently demolished.

Shabi’s account contradicts a previous report from a National Assembly panel, which suggested that while Bobrisky did enjoy preferential treatment, he had remained within the prison walls during his sentence. According to Shabi, the VIP arrangement was hidden until the truth was uncovered.

Bobrisky, who was sentenced to six months in prison in 2024 for abusing the naira, was released in August 2024. The controversy surrounding his incarceration has deepened with additional claims from social critic VeryDarkMan, who shared a voice note allegedly from Bobrisky. In the recording, Bobrisky reportedly claimed to have paid ₦15 million to EFCC officials to have money laundering charges against him dropped. He also allegedly acknowledged the role of a “godfather” and Nigerian Correctional Service staff in facilitating his arrangement to serve his sentence outside the prison.
