Moji Meranda has been re-elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, marking a significant shift in her political journey. Prior to this role, Meranda served as the Speaker of the assembly for 49 days, a position she assumed following the suspension of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa. Her tenure as Speaker was historic, as she broke barriers by becoming one of the few women to ever hold the position in the state’s legislative history.
During her time as Speaker, Meranda focused on fostering unity and addressing key legislative issues, earning respect from her colleagues. However, her resignation as Speaker came after a meeting with high-ranking All Progressives Congress (APC) members to resolve a leadership crisis. Following her resignation, Obasa was reinstated as Speaker, while Meranda was re-elected as Deputy Speaker.
On Monday, during the plenary session of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda officially announced her resignation. She stated, “This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. I resigned to protect the state assembly; I am not a quitter. For now, I take a bow as your Speaker.” Her resignation was accompanied by the stepping down of all principal officers appointed alongside her, marking a significant shift in the assembly’s leadership dynamics. The decision followed a crucial meeting with APC leaders aimed at resolving the ongoing leadership crisis within the assembly.
Meranda’s resignation and subsequent re-election as Deputy Speaker highlight her continued influence and commitment to the assembly. Her brief tenure as Speaker was marked by efforts to promote unity and address legislative challenges, leaving a lasting impact despite its brevity.
As Deputy Speaker, Meranda is expected to play a key role in supporting the assembly’s leadership and ensuring effective governance. The reinstatement of Obasa as Speaker and Meranda’s new role reflect the assembly’s commitment to stability and progress. Together, they aim to address the state’s challenges and prioritize the welfare of Lagos residents, fostering unity and delivering impactful legislation.
