Lagos Lawmakers Re-elect Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker

Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, marking his return to the position after a brief hiatus. Obasa was sworn in on Monday following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who stepped down after serving as Speaker for 49 days.

 Meranda’s resignation came as a surprise to many, though no specific reasons were immediately provided for her decision. Her tenure, though short, was historic, as she became one of the few women to hold the position in the state’s legislative history. Obasa’s return is expected to bring stability and continuity to the assembly as it addresses key issues affecting Lagos State.

Lawmakers and stakeholders have expressed optimism about Obasa’s ability to lead the house effectively, emphasizing the need for unity and progress in Lagos.

 Speaking after his reinstatement, Obasa expressed gratitude to his colleagues and party leaders for their support. He said, “Today is not the day for speech-making but to appreciate our colleagues who have put a lot into this gathering today.” He also extended special thanks to prominent leaders, including Bisi Akande, former Osun State governor, and Olusegun Osoba, former governor of Ogun State, for their presence and encouragement.

Obasa reiterated the assembly’s commitment to serving and protecting the interests of Lagosians. He highlighted the maturity of the house and its internal mechanisms for resolving issues, stating, “What is happening today shows that the house is mature and has an internal mechanism to resolve issues.” He further thanked his colleagues for their unity and efforts, adding, “Today is not the day for speech-making, but to thank my colleagues for everything.”

Obasa’s reinstatement signals a return to experienced leadership, with expectations of strengthened legislative processes and improved governance in Lagos. 

His track record and expertise are seen as valuable assets in addressing the state’s challenges and driving progress. As the assembly moves forward, the focus remains on fostering unity, delivering impactful legislation, and prioritizing the welfare of Lagos residents.
