Government Yet to Honor N77,000 NYSC Allowance Commitment

Following earlier commitments by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to increase corps members’ monthly allowance to N77,000 starting February 2025, the Tinubu led Nigerian government has continued to pay the old N33,000 stipend. According to Sahara Reporters, multiple corps members confirmed receiving their February allowance on Friday night, only to find out that it remained unchanged at N33,000 less than half of the new amount that was supposedly approved.  

This development contradicts the assurances given in January by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, who publicly stated that the allowance increment was a done deal, awaiting only the passage of the 2025 budget. Back in January, the DG had declared, “The Federal Government has already approved the increment of your allowance. It is no longer news; we have the approval in our hands. What we are waiting for is just the passage of the budget.” 

The failure to implement the promised increase has left many corps members frustrated and disappointed. The current N33,000 allowance is widely considered inadequate to meet the rising cost of living, leaving many struggling to cover basic expenses such as transportation, food, and accommodation. For many corps members, the delay in implementing the new allowance has added to the financial strain they face, particularly in a challenging economic environment.  

Corps members are now calling for clarity and urgent action from the government to address the discrepancy. Many are questioning the delay and urging authorities to prioritize their welfare by fulfilling the promised increment without further delays. The situation has sparked widespread criticism, with Nigerians expressing concern over the government’s failure to honor its commitments to young citizens serving the nation.  

As the controversy unfolds, all eyes are on the government to see if it will take immediate steps to address the issue and ensure that corps members receive the promised N77,000 allowance. For now, the delay remains a source of frustration and disappointment for thousands of young Nigerians serving in the NYSC scheme.
