Court Orders Arrest of VeryDarkMan Over Mercy Chinwo Defamation Case

An Abuja Chief Magistrate Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM). The warrant was issued due to VDM's failure to comply with a summons in a criminal defamation case filed by gospel singer Mercy Chinwo.

Chinwo alleges that VDM made defamatory statements against her on social media, claiming she was involved in a contractual dispute and diverted $345,000 linked to her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu. Chinwo maintains that these allegations are false and damaging to her reputation.

The court's decision follows VDM's failure to appear for proceedings despite being summoned on March 5. VDM's counsel, Deji Adeyanju, pleaded with the court to revoke the arrest order, but the magistrate refused.

Chinwo has presented documentary evidence, including emails and payment receipts, to support her claims. Her legal team argues that VDM's actions violated Section 391 of the Penal Code and Section 24(1)(B) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015.

In addition to the criminal case, Chinwo has also filed a ₦1.1 billion lawsuit against VDM at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. She seeks an order compelling VDM to delete the alleged defamatory statements, issue a public retraction, and apologize.
