Nigerian singer Naira Marley has given testimony before a Magistrate Court in Ikorodu as part of the Coroner’s inquest to determine the cause of Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka Mohbad’s death.
The Marlian boss took part in the proceedings virtually on Friday, where he provided the court with all the information he knew about his colleague’s passing and, in doing so, cleared himself of all allegations made against him.
Beginning by informing the coroner, Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, that he had signed the late Mohbad to his record company, Marlian Records, with the intention of producing four albums, Naira Marley explained that the four albums had not been completed until the artist's departure because of ongoing disputes between the artist and his manager, Opere Babatunde.
The singer also denied any involvement in threatening or molesting the late Mohbad, referencing a police report that cleared him of those allegations.
Marley stated that the allegations of him molesting Mohbad were nothing more than figments of people’s imaginations.
When questioned about the viral video in which the late Mohbad claimed that Naira Marley and the entire Marlian crew should be held responsible if anything happened to him, the witness testified that Mohbad and his parents later apologised for the video, explaining that it was made while the artist was under the influence of drugs.
Marley stated that he and the late Mohbad had no issues or problems.
He distanced himself from Mohbad’s death, stating that he had not seen the late singer for a year before his passing and was out of the country when the incident occurred.
A second witness, Oluwasanmi Falade, the late Mohbad’s lawyer, challenged Naira Marley’s claim that there was no conflict between him and the deceased singer.
The lawyer informed the coroner that a dispute existed between Marlian Records and his client regarding the payment of royalties.
The lawyer stated that, at Mohbad’s request, he sent multiple letters to Marlian Records regarding the issue but never received a response.
However, he noted that the matter is now the subject of litigation at the Federal High Court.
Falade revealed that Mohbad was assaulted at Lekki Beach by music promoter Sam Larry. On his advice, the late singer reported the incident to the Force Headquarters, which made two unsuccessful attempts to apprehend Sam Larry.
After hearing the testimonies, Magistrate Shotobi ordered Sam Larry to appear before the Coroner’s Court on the next adjourned date.
The Coroner also directed parties in the inquest to confirm the address of late Mohbad’s driver so witness summons can also be sent to him to appear before the coroner to testify.
The coroner also instructed the pathologist who carried out an independent autopsy on the late Mohbad to submit a copy of the findings to the Coroner’s Court and send the same to the Chief Coroner before the next adjourned date.
The Coroner adjourned the proceedings to April 11 to hear the testimony of Sam Larry.
