Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has expelled a student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious, for physically assaulting a lecturer, Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies. The decision, announced in an expulsion letter dated February 13, 2025, was signed by the Acting Registrar, Mr. Victor I. Modebelu. The action followed recommendations from the Student Disciplinary Committee, which found Precious guilty of gross misconduct under the university’s disciplinary regulations, specifically Regulation 4 (SDR).

The incident, which gained widespread attention after a viral video circulated online, reportedly occurred when Dr. Okoye interrupted Precious while she was recording a TikTok video on campus. This led to a heated confrontation, culminating in the physical assault of the lecturer. The video sparked public outrage and raised concerns about student conduct and respect for academic staff within the institution.

In the expulsion letter, the university stated that the decision takes immediate effect. Precious was ordered to vacate the university premises and return any university property in her possession. The letter read, “The Acting Vice-Chancellor has, on behalf of the University Senate, approved the Committee’s recommendation that you be expelled, and you are hereby expelled from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The expulsion takes immediate effect.”

This decisive action underscores UNIZIK’s commitment to maintaining discipline and order within its academic community. By taking a firm stance against misconduct, the university aims to uphold its values and ensure a respectful environment for both staff and students. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to institutional regulations and fostering mutual respect in academic settings.

The expulsion of Precious has sparked discussions about student behavior and the need for stricter enforcement of disciplinary measures in Nigerian universities. It also highlights the role of social media in bringing such incidents to light, prompting institutions to address them promptly and transparently. UNIZIK’s response reinforces its dedication to preserving the integrity of its academic community and setting a precedent for handling similar cases in the future.
