President Bola Tinubu has celebrated former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on his 60th birthday, praising his dedication to democracy, governance, and national development. In a statement, Tinubu highlighted their shared history in the pro-democracy struggle against military rule in the 1990s, noting Fayemi’s pivotal role as a strategist during General Sani Abacha’s oppressive regime. He credited Fayemi’s ingenuity and commitment to the success of initiatives like Radio Kudirat, a pro-democracy station named in honor of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola.
After Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, Fayemi founded the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), a think-tank promoting peace and security across Africa. His political career began in 2006 when he contested for Ekiti State governor under the Action Congress (AC). Although his initial victory was annulled, Fayemi’s perseverance led to his eventual declaration as governor in 2010 after a court-ordered re-run.
Tinubu also acknowledged Fayemi’s significant contributions to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, where he chaired the presidential primary panel that selected Muhammadu Buhari as the party’s candidate. Fayemi later served as Minister of Mines and Steel Development and returned for a second term as Ekiti governor in 2018.
Tinubu praised Fayemi’s leadership during challenging economic times and his unwavering commitment to the APC, including his decision to step down during the 2023 presidential primaries, which Tinubu described as an act of humility and comradeship. He lauded Fayemi as a visionary leader, committed democrat, and invaluable ally in Nigeria’s political journey.
As Fayemi marks his 60th birthday, Tinubu wished him continued health and success, celebrating his achievements as an academic, author, administrator, and development expert whose contributions have significantly shaped Nigeria’s democracy and governance.
