Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has asserted that the cost of living in Nigeria is declining under the current administration. This claim was supported by a statement from Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, who highlighted a significant drop in food prices compared to last year. Onanuga described this as evidence of improving economic conditions under President Tinubu’s leadership.

Governor Radda attributed the reduction in food prices to increased support for farmers at both state and federal levels, as well as Tinubu’s efforts to address insecurity, particularly in the Northwest region. During an interview with Arise News, Radda noted that the prices of essential food items, such as rice and maize, have drastically decreased. For instance, a bag of maize, which cost about ₦100,000 last year, now sells for between ₦50,000 and ₦54,000 in Katsina State.

Radda credited this positive development to the collaboration between state and federal governments in tackling insecurity and boosting agricultural productivity. He recalled that shortly after their inauguration, Northwest governors met with President Tinubu to seek support for improving security and agricultural output. The establishment of the Ministry of Livestock and increased support for the Ministry of Agriculture were cited as key initiatives that have enhanced farming activities.

According to Radda, about 95% of farmland in Katsina State was cultivated during the last farming season, leading to increased food production. He emphasized that the improved security situation and government support for farmers have played a crucial role in achieving this milestone. Radda expressed gratitude for Tinubu’s commitment to addressing security challenges and supporting sub-national governments.

Onanuga’s statement and Radda’s remarks suggest that the Tinubu administration’s policies are beginning to yield positive results, particularly in agriculture and food security. However, while the reduction in food prices is a welcome development, many Nigerians remain cautious, calling for sustained efforts to ensure long-term economic stability and affordability of essential goods.
