Oba Oladipo Olaitan has been appointed as the new leader of Afenifere, the prominent pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, following the passing of its former leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo. The decision was made during the group’s monthly general meeting held at Adebanjo’s residence in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State. Oba Olaitan, a seasoned member of Afenifere with over 45 years of service, previously held key positions such as National Financial Secretary under Chief Reuben Fasoranti and Deputy Leader under Chief Ayo Adebanjo. He will serve as acting leader until after Adebanjo’s final burial, after which he will assume the role substantively.

In his acceptance speech, Oba Olaitan pledged to uphold Afenifere’s core values, including its commitment to restructuring and true federalism. He also emphasized the importance of unity within the organization, vowing to strengthen its collective purpose and vision. His appointment comes at a critical time as Afenifere continues to advocate for the socio-political and economic interests of the Yoruba people and Nigeria at large.

Oba Olaitan brings a wealth of experience to the role. Called to the Nigerian Bar in 1971, he served as a Political Adviser to Governor Lateef Jakande and was a member of the Lagos State Executive Council from 1979 to 1983. He also represented his constituency in the House of Representatives and served as the Leader of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in the House from 1999 to 2003.

The meeting, attended by delegates from the six South-West states, as well as Kogi, Kwara, and the Itsekiri of Delta State, also honored the late Chief Ayo Adebanjo for his immense contributions to nation-building. As Afenifere transitions under Oba Olaitan’s leadership, the group remains focused on its mission to promote unity, justice, and equitable governance in Nigeria.
