Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okoku, a prominent native doctor in Anambra State, has been arraigned on five serious charges, including ritual practices, conspiracy to commit robbery, and aiding internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as Yahoo boys. Nwangwu, who was arrested on Sunday, February 16, faced the charges at the Anambra State High Court on Tuesday, February 25, in a ruling delivered by Justice Onochie M. Anyachebelu. The case was brought against him by the Anambra State government, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The charges against Nwangwu include engaging in money ritual practices, maintaining business ties with drug dealers, preparing charms for kidnappers and armed robbers within and outside the state, assisting internet fraudsters in their criminal activities, and performing ritualistic charms for clients. These allegations highlight the severity of his alleged involvement in criminal activities, which have raised significant concerns among law enforcement agencies and the public.
In addition to the charges, the Anambra State government has vowed to confiscate Nwangwu’s properties, including his hotel and cars, as part of efforts to curb criminal activities linked to his operations. The court has adjourned the case to a later date for further hearing, leaving many to await the outcome of what promises to be a high-profile legal battle.
This case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in tackling ritualistic crimes, fraud, and other illicit activities often associated with native doctors in the region. It also serves as a reminder of the government’s commitment to addressing such issues and ensuring that those involved in criminal activities are brought to justice. As the case progresses, it will be closely watched by stakeholders and the public, who are eager to see how the legal system handles such complex and culturally sensitive matters.
