Former President Muhammadu Buhari has claimed that Nigeria’s security and economy experienced significant improvements during his eight-year administration, which lasted from 2015 to 2023. Speaking on Wednesday, February 5, at his country home in Daura, Katsina State, while hosting members of the Katsina State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Buhari reflected on the challenges he inherited from the previous People’s Democratic Party (PDP)-led government. He highlighted issues such as terrorism, widespread insecurity, and a struggling economy as critical problems that required immediate attention upon assuming office.

Buhari emphasized that his administration made considerable strides in addressing these challenges, particularly in combating terrorism and stabilizing the economy. He noted that the security situation, which included the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast, was a major priority, and his government worked to degrade the capabilities of terrorist groups. Additionally, he pointed to efforts in diversifying the economy, reducing dependence on oil, and implementing social investment programs aimed at alleviating poverty and empowering vulnerable groups.

“Nigeria’s security and economy improved significantly under my administration compared to what we met in 2015,” Buhari stated. He expressed optimism that the progress made during his tenure would have a lasting positive impact on the nation, adding, “Things will continue to improve in Nigeria.”

While Buhari’s administration did record some achievements, such as the decimation of Boko Haram strongholds and the implementation of economic reforms, critics argue that challenges like rising debt, inflation, and persistent insecurity in some regions remain unresolved. Nonetheless, Buhari’s remarks underscore his belief in the foundational work his government laid for Nigeria’s future growth and stability. His comments also serve as a reminder of the complexities of governance in a nation as vast and diverse as Nigeria.
