The Nigerian federal government is making a last-minute effort to avert a nationwide shutdown planned by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in protest of the recent 50 percent telecommunications tariff hike. A reliable source revealed that the government will meet with the NLC leadership on Monday at 5 p.m. to address the issue. The meeting, described as a “dialogue on matters of national interest,” will involve the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and other officials in an inter-ministerial effort to resolve the dispute.
The NLC, alongside its allies, has strongly opposed the tariff hike approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on January 20, 2025. The increase has sparked widespread outrage among telecom subscribers, prompting the NLC to mobilize workers and Nigerians for a mass protest scheduled for Tuesday, February 4. In a letter to affiliate unions and state councils last week, NLC General Secretary Emma Ugboaja urged widespread participation to send a strong message to the government.
The planned protest highlights growing frustration over rising costs of living and essential services in Nigeria. The NLC argues that the tariff hike places an undue burden on workers and ordinary citizens already grappling with economic challenges. The federal government’s decision to engage in dialogue suggests a recognition of the potential impact of the protest and the need to address public discontent.
As the meeting unfolds, all eyes will be on whether the government can negotiate a resolution that satisfies both the NLC and telecom stakeholders. Failure to reach an agreement could lead to a significant disruption, with the NLC’s protest poised to draw nationwide attention to the issue of rising tariffs and their impact on Nigerians.
