An Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) witness, Olusegun Joseph Adeleke, testified on Monday at the Federal High Court in Abuja that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello’s name was not involved in the transactions related to the purchase of a N550 million property in Maitama, Abuja. Adeleke, the General Manager of EFAB Properties Limited, revealed that the property was bought by one Shehu Bello, with no evidence linking Yahaya Bello to the deal.
Adeleke, led by EFCC’s lead counsel, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, explained that his company’s chairman, Fabian Nwora, introduced him to Shehu Bello in 2020 to facilitate the purchase of the property located at No. 1 Ikogosi Street, Maitama. He stated that Shehu Bello made the payment and received the necessary documents, including the receipt and letter of allocation. However, Shehu Bello later sought a refund after discovering the property was under EFCC investigation.
Under cross-examination by Yahaya Bello’s lead counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, Adeleke confirmed that Yahaya Bello’s name did not appear on any transaction documents, including the title deed. He also admitted that he never met Yahaya Bello during the process and acted solely on instructions from his chairman.
The prosecution also presented a second witness, Williams Abimbola, a compliance officer with United Bank for Africa (UBA), who provided bank statements and account details related to the case. These documents were admitted as evidence without objection from the defense.
The case has been adjourned to March 6 and 7 for further trial. The testimony highlights the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to investigate alleged money laundering, while the defense maintains that Yahaya Bello had no involvement in the property transactions.
