Veteran Nigerian actor Chiwetalu Agu has advised singles to conduct thorough background checks before entering into marriage. His advice comes amid the ongoing controversy surrounding singer 2Face’s divorce from his wife, Annie Idibia. In a trending video shared on Instagram, Agu emphasized the importance of avoiding peer pressure and the desperate urge to marry, warning that such decisions can lead to lifelong consequences.
Agu stressed that marriage should not be seen as a "do-or-die" affair. He urged individuals in toxic or abusive relationships to seek help or leave for their safety. “If you have an abusive partner or are in a toxic relationship, run for your life. If you are not happy in your marriage, seek help or run for your life,” he said. The actor highlighted the dangers of staying in harmful marriages, citing an example of a woman who was tragically killed by her husband. “Divorce is better than rest in peace. Staying because of children or wealth can lead to devastating outcomes,” he added.
Agu also cautioned against superficial reasons for marriage, such as physical appearance or societal pressure. “She is beautiful, or he is handsome; I want to marry by all means—see you, see death. My mates are all married, but I’m still single—see you, see death,” he stated. He encouraged singles to prioritize their safety and well-being over societal expectations.
The actor concluded with a prayer, urging people to avoid mistakes that could cost them their lives in the name of marriage. His message serves as a timely reminder for singles to approach marriage with caution, ensuring they make informed decisions to safeguard their future. Agu’s candid advice has sparked conversations about the importance of mental and emotional safety in relationships.
