A bird flu outbreak has been confirmed in Plateau and Katsina states, affecting over 3,000 birds and raising concerns among poultry farmers and health officials. In Plateau State, the Director of Animal

Health, Dr. Shase’et Sipak Dawat, revealed that the outbreak was first reported on January 23, 2025, in the Farin Gada area of Jos North Local Government. The disease struck a poultry farm, causing significant losses. Dr. Dawat expressed concern that some infected birds were sold before officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development could intervene. He urged poultry farmers to remain vigilant, maintain strict hygiene, and report any suspicious cases to prevent further spread.

Similarly, in Katsina State, Dr. Yau Ishaku, an animal health officer in Malumfashi Local Government Area, confirmed the outbreak, noting it was detected on January 21, 2025. He emphasized the importance of restricting access to farms and maintaining proper sanitation to curb the disease. Dr. Ishaku also called on farmers in Malumfashi, Kafur, and Kankara Local Government Areas to implement preventive measures and report unusual poultry deaths promptly.

The Federal Government had earlier issued a nationwide alert following an outbreak in Kano State, warning poultry farmers and veterinary offices to take proactive steps. Bird flu, a highly contagious viral disease, poses significant risks to both poultry and humans, making containment efforts critical. Farmers are advised to enhance biosecurity measures, including disinfecting equipment, controlling farm access, and monitoring bird health closely. Collaboration between farmers, health officials, and government agencies is essential to mitigate the outbreak’s impact and safeguard the poultry industry.
