US Suspends HIV Treatment Support for Nigeria and Other Developing Nations

The United States government has suspended its support for HIV treatment in Nigeria and other developing nations, following an executive order by President Donald Trump. This decision has halted the disbursement of funds from the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program that provides HIV/AIDS treatment to over 20.6 million people worldwide.

PEPFAR, which has an annual budget of $6.5 billion, has been instrumental in saving lives and curbing the spread of HIV. Since its inception, the program is estimated to have saved 26 million lives. However, the US State Department has stated that the country is no longer willing to "blindly dole out money with no return for the American people".

The suspension of PEPFAR operations is set to last for at least 90 days, unless an exemption is granted. This decision has sparked concerns among public health experts, who fear that the program might be terminated entirely. Nigeria, which has one of the highest global HIV burdens, relies heavily on PEPFAR for life-saving medications and healthcare infrastructure.

Over two million Nigerians living with HIV benefit from the program, which has contributed over $6 billion to the nation’s HIV/AIDS response. The potential termination of PEPFAR poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s efforts to control the spread of HIV and provide essential treatment to those in need.
