Nigerian singer Skales has sparked intense debate following his reaction to the death of an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officer, who was shot during a recent raid. In a series of emotional social media posts on January 20, 2025, the artist shared his lack of sympathy, pointing to his own traumatic encounter with the agency in 2023 as the reason behind his comments.
Recalling the harrowing 2023 incident, Skales detailed how EFCC officers raided his home without warning, breaking down his door with sledgehammers and storming in armed with AK-47 rifles. The raid, which took place in the presence of his family—including his newborn child—left lasting emotional scars.
“I woke up to chaos—my family terrified, my door in splinters, and guns pointed at us. That memory still haunts me,” Skales wrote.
The singer specifically named an EFCC officer, "Mr. Femi," accusing him of orchestrating the raid that caused his family irreparable distress.
In his posts, Skales criticized the EFCC’s aggressive raid methods, describing them as “overbearing” and harmful to innocent citizens. Addressing the officer’s recent death, he stated: “They had it coming. When you use violence and intimidation as tools, you invite the same fate upon yourselves.”
His comments have reignited public discourse around the EFCC's controversial raid tactics, which have often been criticized for their lack of due process and excessive force.
While some fans and followers sympathized with Skales’ trauma, others condemned his remarks as insensitive. Critics argue that a human life should never be dismissed, regardless of the circumstances.
The EFCC has yet to respond to Skales’ allegations or his public criticism, but the incident has drawn fresh attention to the need for reform in the agency’s operational methods.
As the conversation continues to unfold, Skales’ comments underline the broader tension between the EFCC and Nigerian citizens who have experienced its heavy-handed tactics firsthand.
