The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to establishing Lagos as Africa’s entertainment hub by capitalizing on the success of the 2024 Detty December festivities, which drew over 1.2 million fans from across Nigeria and the diaspora.

During a meeting with Ghazi Shami, founder of Empire Distribution, Records, and Publishing Company USA, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, highlighted the significant role of the entertainment industry in the event’s success. She praised the contributions of Nigerian music heavyweights such as Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, Olamide, Adekunle Gold, and Seyi Vibez.

Benson-Awoyinka outlined plans to make next year’s edition even more impactful. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of diversifying Lagos’ economy through tourism was underscored, with a focus on strengthening the music and creative industries.

“Lagos has made great strides in film and the creative arts, but the music sector requires additional structure and support,” Benson-Awoyinka said. She revealed plans for initiatives like establishing a music academy, conducting talent searches, and offering specialized training in music production and business.

“The ultimate goal is to develop a conveyor belt of professionals—musicians, executives, lawyers, and engineers—to ensure Lagos remains a global music hub,” she added.

Shami commended Lagos for its exemplary performance, describing Detty December as a “luminous world stage for African success.” However, he noted the challenges within Nigeria’s music industry, including inadequate legal expertise.

“The lack of skilled legal talent in the Nigerian music industry often results in young artists signing exploitative contracts. This forces them to rely on international lawyers for issues Nigerian practitioners should handle, impacting confidence and expertise in the local industry,” Shami said.

He emphasized the need for partnerships to address these gaps, particularly in record deals, royalty contracts, and intellectual property rights. Shami expressed his willingness to collaborate with the Lagos State Government to improve legal infrastructure and secure better deals for Nigerian artists.

Lagos’ efforts to enhance its music industry are part of a broader vision to position the state as a global entertainment and tourism destination.
