Renowned food critic Opeyemi Famakin has vowed to stop discussing his finances publicly after receiving a hefty tax bill of N80 million from the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS).
Famakin revealed during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo that the tax authorities contacted him within 48 hours of him disclosing his income during a previous interview.
The critic, who had once sparked online debates by claiming to be Nigeria’s highest-paid food critic with a weekly earning of N9 million on a bad week, shared the surprising aftermath of his financial disclosure.
“Two days after I mentioned my finances, LIRS sent me an email. They billed me N80 million. I paid it o. It was like play,” Famakin recounted.
He expressed his resolve to avoid further public discussions about his earnings, adding humorously:
“Even though I told them ‘allegedly,’ they said no, but let’s not discuss it. I’m now a proud taxpayer.”
The incident underscores the risks public figures face when discussing their wealth and earnings openly, as authorities and the public often scrutinize such statements. Famakin’s story has reignited conversations around transparency, taxation, and the challenges of managing financial fame.
