Beninese-American actor Djimon Hounsou has revealed his ongoing financial struggles despite over two decades of success in Hollywood. The acclaimed actor, known for roles in films like Gladiator and Blood Diamond, opened up during an appearance on CNN’s African Voices Changemakers.
Hounsou, who has received two Oscar nominations and starred in numerous blockbuster films, expressed frustration over being undervalued in the industry.
“I’m still struggling to make a living,” he shared. “I’ve been in the filmmaking business for over two decades with two Oscar nominations and many blockbuster films, and yet, I’m definitely underpaid.”
The actor also addressed systemic racism in Hollywood, recalling how he was overlooked for an Oscar despite earning a Golden Globe nomination.
“They ignored me for the Oscars because they thought that I had just come off the boat and the streets,” he said. “Even though I successfully proved myself, they didn’t see me as an actor deserving of respect.”
Hounsou criticized the entertainment industry’s slow progress toward diversity and inclusion, stating, “This conceptual idea of diversity still has a long way to go. Systemic racism won’t change like that anytime soon.”
The actor’s candid remarks highlight the persistent challenges faced by many actors of African descent in Hollywood, despite their talent and contributions to the industry.
