In a powerful and unexpected moment at Donald J. Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States, Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell delivered an invocation inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic "I Have a Dream" speech.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, no less, Sewell invoked King’s words to pray for unity, liberation, and a new era of accountability under Trump’s presidency.

The ceremony, held in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, was marked by Sewell’s emotional prayer that echoed King’s call for a nation where people are judged by the “content of their character.”

Sewell thanked God for sparing Trump during a July 2024 assassination attempt, referring to it as a "millimeter miracle," and called for the new administration to embody freedom and justice for all Americans.

“We want to not only say it, but pray it,” Sewell declared, asking God to guide Trump in fulfilling the dream King spoke of decades ago.

Sewell, pastor of 180 Church in Detroit, has been a vocal supporter of Trump, hosting him at his church during the 2024 campaign and delivering a rousing speech at the Republican National Convention. Trump kept a personal promise to Sewell by inviting him to lead the prayer at the historic ceremony.

The pastor also hinted at using Trump’s administration to enforce accountability, particularly in federal funding for low-income housing projects, ensuring contractors hire local workers. “That’s the beauty of having a president you have a relationship with,” Sewell noted.

Trump, visibly moved, embraced Sewell after the prayer, telling him, “You’re special. You’re so good.”

From Streets to the Capitol

Sewell’s journey from Detroit’s east side—where he once sold drugs and watched his father go to prison—to standing alongside a U.S. president is nothing short of remarkable. After finding faith in 1999, he began preaching at 19 and has since built 180 Church into a growing congregation.

Sewell’s participation at the inauguration, alongside his appearances at high-profile conservative events, has catapulted him from a local pastor to an internationally recognized figure. The moment was both a personal triumph and a significant chapter in his mission to bring faith and politics together for what he calls “a time of liberation.”

As Trump’s presidency begins, Sewell’s invocation has become a symbol of the complex intersection of faith, politics, and race in modern America.
