Nigerian lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has openly criticized Burna Boy’s $30,000 gift to a man allegedly connected to socialite Cubana Chief Priest, accusing the Grammy-winning artist of engaging in clout-chasing.
Adeyanju took to social media to express his disapproval, stating that Burna Boy neglected impoverished members of his extended family while making a show of philanthropy online. He wrote, “The person that gave $30k for clout has more poor people in his extended family than those in Chief Priest’s family. Giving money to some folks is waste.”
The debate was further fueled when Cubana Chief Priest clarified that the recipient of Burna Boy’s generosity was not his blood relative, countering earlier assumptions.
The incident has since sparked intense discussions on social media about celebrity philanthropy. While some critics agreed with Adeyanju, arguing that the funds could have been better utilized to support broader charitable initiatives like orphanages, others defended Burna Boy’s actions, emphasizing that his gesture, regardless of intent, was still a meaningful act of kindness.
A social media user commented, “Helping others should never be reduced to clout-chasing. A $30k gift to change someone’s life reflects generosity.” Another weighed in on the societal expectations placed on public figures, asking, “Why is it that when celebrities help strangers, it’s called clout-chasing, but when it’s family, it’s called entitlement?”
The conversation continues to draw contrasting views on the responsibilities and motives of celebrities in addressing societal issues.
