Nigerian R&B sensation Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, is on the verge of making history as the first African artist to win two Grammy Awards in one night, according to predictions by Billboard. The 67th Grammy Awards, set to take place on Sunday, February 2nd, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, will see Tems nominated in three categories: Best African Music Performance for “Love Me Jeje,” Best Global Music Album for her debut album “Born In The Wild,” and Best R&B Song for “Burning.” Billboard has tipped her to win two of these categories, cementing her place as a global music icon.
In the Best African Music Performance category, Tems’ “Love Me Jeje,” a modern take on Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 classic, is predicted to triumph over strong contenders like Yemi Alade’s “Tomorrow,” Asake and Wizkid’s “MMS,” Chris Brown’s “Sensational” featuring Davido and Lojay, and Burna Boy’s “Higher.” While “Sensational” and “Higher” are noted as formidable competitors, Tems’ unique artistry and global appeal give her an edge. This category, which debuted last year with Tyla’s “Water” as the inaugural winner, highlights the growing influence of African music on the global stage
Tems is also favored to win the Best Global Music Album category with “Born In The Wild,” her highly acclaimed debut album. Competing against projects like Matt B’s “Alkebulan II,” Ciro Hurtado’s “Paisajes,” Rema’s “Heis,” and Antonio Rey’s “Historias De Un Flamenco,” Tems stands out as the only previous Grammy winner in this category. However, Billboard acknowledges that Antonio Rey’s “Historias De Un Flamenco” could pose a strong challenge. As the Grammys are known for their unpredictability, the final outcome remains uncertain. However, Tems’ nominations and the buzz surrounding her work underscore her rising prominence in the global music scene. Hosted by South African comedian Trevor Noah for the fifth consecutive time, the 67th Grammys will also see Beyoncé leading the nominations with eleven nods. All eyes will be on Tems as she aims to make history and bring more glory to African music on the world stage
