Bill Gates has opened up about his divorce from Melinda Gates, calling it the "mistake" he regrets the most in his life. In an interview with The Times of London, the Microsoft co-founder, 69, admitted that the split from his wife of 27 years has left a lasting impact on him.
Gates described the divorce as "miserable" for both him and Melinda, stating that it was a difficult period that lasted for at least two years. Despite the challenges, the couple has maintained a friendly relationship and continues to co-parent their three children, Jennifer, 28, Rory, 25, and Phoebe, 22.
The billionaire philanthropist credited his marriage to Melinda for keeping him "grounded" during the early days of Microsoft, which he co-founded and built into a trillion-dollar company. The couple married in 1994 and were together until their separation in 2020, which was made public in May 2021.
Gates acknowledged that he has made mistakes in his life, but the divorce from Melinda tops the list. "I'm not sure I'd want to go back and change anything, but the divorce thing was a mistake," he said. The couple has since moved on, with both Bill and Melinda dating other people.
Despite the end of their marriage, Gates expressed gratitude for the time they spent together and the family they built. "Melinda and I still see each other we have three kids and two grandchildren, so there are family events," he said. The couple's commitment to their family and philanthropic work has endured, even as their marriage has come to an end.
