Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has publicly criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that the party has strayed from its founding ideals and is fostering poor leadership. El-Rufai expressed his concerns during a national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria, labeling the current state of governance and opposition in the country as a "national emergency."
El-Rufai, who shared his thoughts on his social media handle, highlighted the absence of internal democracy and active party structures within the APC. He noted that no party organ has met in two years, questioning whether the party is being run as a "one-man show" or a "zero-man show." El-Rufai also condemned the quality of leadership emerging from political parties, blaming the situation on unqualified delegates.
The former governor emphasized the need for political parties to raise their standards for candidates and delegates, stressing that the constitution's minimum requirement of a secondary school certificate should not be sufficient for nominations. El-Rufai lamented that the APC's founding goals, including combating corruption and enhancing security, have been abandoned.
In response to El-Rufai's comments, Presidential Adviser Daniel Bwala questioned whether the former governor would have held the same position if he were still part of the government or cabinet. El-Rufai's criticism has sparked a heated debate, with many Nigerians weighing in on the state of the APC and the country's leadership.
